LOVE

This series of works express my personal experience of playing the violin. My violin is one of the most important items in my life. It has witnessed my growing experience from elementary school to university; from China to Canada; from a little girl to an adult. The time that I spend with it is more than anyone in this world. It means so much more than an object. It is in my blood and spirits.

Wonder

This set of three acrylic paintings are an expression of my personal life stages and self-growth. As we grow up, we start losing our imaginations and become more focused on things that we think are important. We give up those naive ideas and start chasing money, fame, or different kinds of achievements in our life. I don’t think that we should neglect those unrealistic thoughts because they seem useless. We have paid too much attention to others and always think that we already know about ourselves, but there are still wonderful things inside of us waiting for us to explore. I tried to create a small world with my guinea pig’s perspectives through my paintings, and I want to keep my innocent world in these canvases in case I grow up one day.

Still-life paintings

I love express my feelings bright colors and I always believe that everything has its own emotions beyond its physical phenomenon. In my paintings, I have exaggerated the objects' colors in real life to add another layer for their personalities.

Friends

Animated Body

This project is a performance-based video that expresses the tension of our feelings to the body. In the video, I chose to expose my body and skin to challenge the boundary between the sense of pleasure and the unpleasantness of the body. We feel sexy and romantic when we are about to approach the line. Once we cross the line, we may feel more dangerous and gross about the body. Sometimes romance and danger are more connected than separated.

Stairs

I am always afraid of small enclosed spaces, especially stairs. Those stair rooms in residential buildings are narrow enclosed spaces, but they extend vertically. Every level of the stairs looks the same, which creates an illusion of a looping environment. The stairs keep rotating and extending, which becomes a space that I can never escape. I would like to build the relationship between self and reality by dissolving the realistic footage and animations in the video. I hope to bring audiences to see stairs from my perspective and understand how this kind of fear has been formed.
